How often to service your forklift

How Often Should a Forklift be Serviced?

It’s an age old question, how often should a forklift be serviced? Maybe you just bought a lift
truck and now you’re being presented with a service contract. Perhaps, you’ve had the lift for a
while and you’re wondering, “When was the last time this was serviced? Is it time for another
one? How much service is enough, and how much is too much?”

OSHA has straight forward rules around the maintenance of industrial trucks, which is found
under the compliance section 1910.178(q), Maintenance of industrial trucks according to OSHA,
a lift truck should be removed from service if it is not “in safe operating condition”.

Another important factor to take into consideration is the manufacturer’s instructions on vehicle
maintenance.

A Lift Truck must be safe to operate:
There are a lot of different fault that can make a forklift unsafe to operate. If you have any of
these problems, it’s time for a repair:

  • A gauge is found to not be functioning properly
  • Welds are broken
  • Bolts are missing
  • The overhead guard is damaged
  • Tires are missing large pieces of rubber
